Line Breeding Miniature Cattle

There are numerous good reasons for using Miniature Hereford genetics in a commercial crossbreeding or up-breeding program. The more obvious transmittable physical characteristics are the Mini Hereford's thick, haired coat for climate and pest control along with their docile natures. They mature sexually earlier naturally than most other breeds, and by nomenclature are a small to medium frame size: Miniature and Classic Herefords respectively.

Frame size is of particular importance for several reasons. After spending many years breeding bigger beef animals, the North American beef industry is now back- pedaling. Larger carcasses contribute to equipment breakdowns in handling and, more importantly, the American consumer seems to prefer a rib-eye steak from a 600 - 1000 lbs. steer with a frame score of 00 to 3, to that of a 1400-lbs. steer with a frame score of 7 or 8. Locally, our sale barn has started to dock the Simmental Cattle for too gigantic size, they can't get them in the weigh blocks due to their size.

Texas A&M research has proven to both feedlot owners and grass farmers that there is a superior feed conversion ratio of the smaller cow. The famed foraging ability and "easy keeper" status of the Hereford deserves serious consideration from both the large or small beef farmeran established one or the prospective beef farmer. This Miniature Hereford cow just goes further on less forage than any other beef cow and the Standard size in particular.

Using the Mini Hereford for crossbreeding in a "breed up" program is one way that our customers are entered the gourmet beef business. This method is oftentimes more affordable than purchasing registered breeding stock.

Breeding up also increases the options for those attempting to adapt the breed to their own specific needs and climate. For example crossing a mini Brahma (Zebu) on a herd of Mini Hereford Cows is putting very tender beef in South Mexico, and other warmer coastal areas.

When starting a breed-up program it is easy to use horned or polled, solid colored, medium size cows. The white face markings of the Hereford is a dominant trait brought about by several hundred years of genetic line breeding. The resultant calf will exhibit that beautiful white face -- this and the tenderness of meat trait are difficult to eliminate.

Line breeding is common practice with all types of livestock, and is nothing more than planned interbreeding. With line breeding, animals are mated with ancestors of outstanding characteristics so as to "burn-in" that desired trait. Their degree of kinship is a matter of research. For example, you might choose to breed your females to a related bull if you have determined that this bull has a greater probability of bettering the characteristics you desire. Using a bull on his granddaughters is a  common practice as well as an outstanding bull on it's successive daughters. Positive traits can be strengthened with the line breeding strategy, but one needs to be aware that the operative word here is outstanding.

With today's interest in grass farming and the grass-finished beef side of the industry blooming, the adaptability and superior characteristics of Miniature Hereford cattle should not be overlooked in any beef breeding program.

Karl Falster began his interest in agriculture and animal husbandry focused on organic farming practices in 1970 as the co-founder of the Coastal Carolina Organic Gardening Society of Charleston South Carolina. Since then Karl and his wife Nancy concentrate on farming organic raw dairy cheeses and a Seed Stock Miniature Registered Hereford cattle breeding program East Texas.
